LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring William L. Slocum upon the occasion of
being named 2013 Volunteer of the Year by the Ontario Chamber of
Commerce

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, William L. Slocum has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor William L.
Slocum upon the occasion of being named 2013 Volunteer of the Year by
the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, to be celebrated at its Annual Awards
Dinner on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at The Brookwoods Golf Club,
Ontario, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Volunteer of the Year award recognizes outstanding
members of the community who donate their time and/or talents to help
their neighbors and fellow residents with no thought of reward or recog-
nition; and
WHEREAS, William L. Slocum is such an individual; his extensive record
of community service is a testament to the depth of his concern for
others; and
WHEREAS, A fifth generation native of an Ontario family, and former
business owner, William L. Slocum is a 55-year member of the Ontario
Volunteer Fire Company, past member and officer of the Wayne County
Volunteer Firemen's Association and past member of the Northern Central
New York Volunteer Firemen's Association; and
WHEREAS, William L. Slocum is also an original member of the former
Ontario Entertainment Membership Corporation, a founder of the Ontario
Firematic Explorer Post, a sponsor of a ladies' bowling league and team,
and a former coach of many Little League baseball teams; in addition,
this versatile citizen safeguards the history of his beloved community
as a long-term trustee and contributing volunteer at the Heritage Square
Museum, as well as the Town of Ontario Historical and Landmark Preserva-
tion Society; and
WHEREAS, A truly valued and respected member of his community, William
L. Slocum served as the Town of Ontario Superintendent of Highways for
16 years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, William L. Slocum has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which William L. Slocum has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor William L. Slocum upon the occasion of being named 2013 Volunteer
of the Year by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to William L. Slocum.
