LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of The
Sayville Village Improvement Society

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of The Sayville Village Improvement Society,
celebrated at its Annual Holiday Cocktail Party on Saturday, December 7,
2013, at the Gillette House in Sayville, New York; and
WHEREAS, In March of 1914, The Sayville Village Improvement Society
began when Mrs. Lena Hoag called a meeting of local woman with the idea
of forming a civic organization with a mission to make Sayville, New
York a better place to live; and
WHEREAS, Upon its establishment, The Sayville Village Improvement
Society, Sayville's first civic organization, first petitioned the Board
of Health to limit garbage dumping in the area; in addition, a beacon
light was erected at the entrance to Browns' River to ensure the safety
of the local baymen; and
WHEREAS, During the first World War, The Sayville Village Improvement
Society started a local branch of the Red Cross, and created Honor
Boards for local servicemen, one of which is still displayed in the
library today; and
WHEREAS, The Sayville Village Improvement Society was instrumental in
the completion of the Sayville Library, as well as the opening of the
public bathing beach on July 1, 1925; and
WHEREAS, The Greenthumb Committee, now known as the Beautification
Committee, began in 1976 with the goal of beautifying downtown Sayville;
using redwood boxes made by students at the Junior High School, the
group planted flowers to be placed along the main roads; and
WHEREAS, Whether providing the town with beautiful stone waste recep-
tacles, serving a High School Senior with a scholarship, or providing a
local under-privileged family with food, toys and coats, The Sayville
Village Improvement Society has, for 100 years, dedicated itself to
making Sayville, New York a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, The Sayville Village Improvement
Society's distinguished record merits the recognition and respectful
tribute of this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Sayville Village Improvement
Society; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Sayville Village Improvement Society.
