LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the found-
ing of the Norwich Family YMCA on November 3, 2012

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize these
illustrious organizations within this great State and Nation whose focus
and intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commem-
orate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Norwich Family YMCA
on November 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, For 150 years, Norwich Family YMCA has carried out its
mission by delivering programs which enable individuals and families to
reach their fullest potential in terms of spirit, mind, and body; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Norwich Family YMCA delivers program and
membership services to more than 10,000 members and program partic-
ipants; and
WHEREAS, The Norwich Family YMCA provides direct community benefits
that impact many through their Open Doors Scholarship Program, Unemploy-
ment Membership Program, Military Membership Program, Outreach Program-
ming, and opening their doors annually to an average of fifty community
organizations that need a place to meet, operate, and function within
the community; and
WHEREAS, The Norwich Family YMCA serves people of all ages, races,
faiths, backgrounds, incomes and abilities through a wide variety of
programs and services designed to meet changing needs of the community;
and
WHEREAS, The Norwich Family YMCA honors a rich history including the
major accomplishment of one of the organization's first projects of
collecting books for soldiers; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, the Norwich Family YMCA has a long
record of partnerships with other community organizations, such as
schools, hospitals, police departments, civic organizations, colleges,
corporations and opening their doors when their community is in need
(floods, fires, no power, hot showers); and
WHEREAS, Volunteer-founded, volunteer-based and volunteer-led, Ameri-
ca's YMCAs serve more than 10,000 neighborhoods in the Untied States,
uniting men, women and children; at the heart of community life across
America, mission-driven YMCAs are a place to belong and to live the
values that guide and unite its members through caring, honesty, respect
and responsibility; and
WHEREAS, From cities to suburbs to small towns, YMCAs work to promote
youth development, healthy living and social responsibility; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Norwich Family
YMCA on November 3, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Norwich Family YMCA.
