LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of BSR which
was celebrated on March 7, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the achievements of individuals and businesses which contribute
substantially to the economic health and vitality of the communities of
the State of New York, and to their quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the successful operation of BSR which was
celebrated on March 7, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Founded on March 7, 1913, by Samuel M. Griffiths, the Bing-
hamton Slag Roofing Company (now known as BSR), began business of the
corner of Water and Henry Streets in downtown Binghamton; and
WHEREAS, Binghamton Slag Roofing originated its name based upon the
roofing technology in use during that period; slag was a byproduct of
the Pittsburg steel industry and was crushed and used as protective
gravel surfacing on hot asphalt roofs in the early years; it is no long-
er used; and
WHEREAS, In the 1980s, the company changed its name to BSR and split
into two businesses: BSR provides roofing and construction services to
commercial and residential clients, and Weathermaster provides commer-
cial roofing service to the public sector; and
WHEREAS, Charles and Peter Griffiths represent the 4th generation of
their family to manage companies that evolved as a result of Samuel M.
Griffiths's original storefront; today, Gregory Griffiths, the 5th
generation, is employed at BSR; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when business
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the BSR which was celebrated on
March 7, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to BSR.
