LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Al Cullinane upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2013 Public Service Award by Kiwanettes
of Oceanside on April 25, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those outstanding individuals whose purposeful endeavors as
involved members of their community serve to enhance the quality of life
therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Al
Cullinane upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2013
Public Service Award by Kiwanettes of Oceanside to be celebrated with "A
Round of Applause" on Thursday, April 25, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Al Cullinane was born in 1925, in Boston, Massachusetts, the
oldest of six children; he grew up during the Great Depression in a
three room apartment with his parents and siblings in Somerville, Massa-
chusetts, where he enjoyed spending time with his immediate family,
grandparents and friends; and
WHEREAS, Al Cullinane was witness to the benevolence and kindness of
family and neighbors during difficult times; and
WHEREAS, As a child, Al Cullinane loved to ice skate, and learned in a
pair of oversized skates that belonged to his Aunt; later, that same
Aunt bought him a new pair that actually fit him; and
WHEREAS, As an adult, Al Cullinane taught an ice skating program for
handicapped children; ultimately, he enjoyed a career in education,
serving roughly 30 years in the New York State School System as a teach-
er of foreign languages and mathematics, as well as an administrator;
WHEREAS, Prior to his teaching career, Al Cullinane worked at various
jobs including factory work to provide for his young family; he received
his bachelor's degree from Catholic University and his master's degree
from SUNY Oswego; he also studied additional graduate work at Columbia,
NYU, CW Post and Fordham; and
WHEREAS, The loving Patriarch of an extremely close knit family, Al
Cullinane is the loving father of three daughters, and also a proud
grandfather; he chose to work many summers at Camp Costigan so his
daughters could experience the wonders of summer day camp; and
WHEREAS, His crowning achievement was his ability to care for his
bride of nearly 58 years, his beloved Ann, during the last years of her
life in her own home, remaining at her side, exactly what she wanted;
WHEREAS, Al Cullinane has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, An active member of his community for more than six decades,
Al Cullinane was one of the first members of Oceanside Community Service
when it was first organized; he served as president of Oceanside Commu-
nity Service from 2002 to 2004, is a member of Oceanside Kiwanis, and a
Knight at the Fr. Joseph O'Connell Council of The Knights of Columbus;
WHEREAS, A member of St. Anthony's Parish, Al Cullinane was the recip-
ient of the 1979 Citizen of the Year by the Oceanside Chamber of
Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Al Cullinane is extremely involved with the Spanish community
as he is fluent in the language; he works with St. Vincent DePaul help-
ing to assist the needy by supplying food, clothing, housing referrals,

legal and medical referrals, and solving the many problems that arise;
WHEREAS, A warm and caring individual, Al Cullinane has been committed
to helping those in need for the past 60 years; he generously supports
community programs and services whenever the need arises; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Al Cullinane upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2013 Public Service Award by Kiwanettes of Oceanside; and be it
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution suitably engrossed, be trans-
mitted to Al Cullinane.
