LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Nkenge Gilliam upon the occasion of her
designation by the Harvard Club of Long Island as a Distinguished Teach-
er of 2013

WHEREAS, Individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and
in service to their community merit the highest commendation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, this Legislative Body is justly
proud to honor Nkenge Gilliam upon the occasion of her designation by
the Harvard Club of Long Island as a Distinguished Teacher of 2013; and
WHEREAS, She was honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island's annual
University Relations Lunch on April 7, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Harvard Club of Long Island's awards recognize people who
transform the future; dedicated teachers such as Nkenge Gilliam expend
unfathomable amounts of time and energy on their students day after day
and year after year; and
WHEREAS, Nkenge Gilliam, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a
Master of Arts degree in history from SUNY Stony Brook, has taught U.S.
History for 15 years and also serves as Elmont High School's Model
United Nations Program's Co-Advisor; Advisor of Students Against
Destructive Decisions; and Advisor of the MSG Varsity Media Club, a high
school sports television network; and
WHEREAS, Nkenge Gilliam is, in addition, a Member of the Board of
Highlighting Success, Inc., a community-based organization which works
diligently to expand opportunities for young people; and
WHEREAS, Nkenge Gilliam truly merits recognition by the Harvard Club
of Long Island as a Distinguished Teacher of 2013; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Nkenge Gilliam upon the occasion of her designation by the
Harvard Club of Long Island as a Distinguished Teacher of 2013; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nkenge Gilliam.
