LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Jewish Community Relations Council
of Long Island upon the occasion of hosting a program commemorating Yom
HaShoah on April 18, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island upon the occasion
of hosting a program commemorating Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance
Day); this auspicious occasion will be celebrated on Thursday, April 18,
2013, at Hofstra University; and
WHEREAS, This year, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long
Island will honor Holocaust survivor Charlotte Schwiminer of Nassau
County, as well as recognize 16 young people who are working to create a
more civil society; and
WHEREAS, The 16 Nassau County youths include: Carle Place High School
- Timothy Leung, Katlin Megiel, Thomas Monahan, and Thomas Vestuto;
Floral Park Memorial High School - Janice Lee and Ling Song; Great Neck
North High School - Laura Simeon, Tyler Bloom, Emily Nassir, and Doris
Descorbeth; Manhasset High School - Aidan Owens; Roslyn High School -
Carly Hanft; Sewanaka High School - Robert Dowling; and Temple Sinai
Roslyn - Evan Mester, Perri Schreiber, and Allie Schreiber; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the Jewish Community Relations Council - Long
Island (JCRC-LI) is to inform, collaborate and mobilize the Long Island
community to take action locally, nationally and internationally to
address community relations issues important to both the Jewish and
non-Jewish communities; and
WHEREAS, The goals of JCRC-LI are to: serve as an umbrella organiza-
tion for Jewish institutions across Long Island; foster positive and
meaningful intergroup/interfaith relationships; serve as an information
and advocacy resource about Israel and international affairs for the
Jewish and non-Jewish communities; and maintain an ongoing dialogue
between the Jewish community and governmental officials at the local,
state and federal level; and
WHEREAS, JCRC-LI was formed in order to establish a long term communi-
ty relations agenda that is essential for the well-being of a vibrant
Long Island Jewish community; its leadership is comprised of Jews from
both Nassau and Suffolk counties who are involved in Jewish, civic and
business organizations; they work with the leadership of UJA-Federation
of New York's Long Island office and its beneficiary agencies, as well
as with area synagogues, Jewish day schools, and other Jewish organiza-
tions; and
WHEREAS, It is important for the Jewish community to build on existing
relationships and develop new ones with leaders of the established and
emerging communities; JCRC-LI ensures that the Jewish community has a
voice among the leaders of the community and works with others fostering
a spirit of collaboration and cooperation to benefit all of Long Island;
and
WHEREAS, JCRC-LI also serves as a central coordinating body for Jewish
community relations across Long Island and operates as a nexus between
community-based organizations and public and private institutions; it
opens the lines of communication between communities and draws upon
resources from its staff and lay leadership to provide a valued added

organization, not only to Long Island Jewish institutions, but also to
the non-Jewish community; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island upon the
occasion of hosting a program commemorating Yom HaShoah (Holocaust
Remembrance Day); and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island, Char-
lotte Schwimmer, and the 16 Nassau County youths.
