LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Lou Howard upon the occasion of his
selection as the inaugural inductee of the Farmingdale State College
Aviation Hall of Fame, on December 19, 2012

WHEREAS, In the course of the evolving development of the Empire State,
there have emerged certain public servants of truly magnanimous conduct
and bearing; we call these individuals "distinguished citizens" of the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend such a
distinguished public servant, Lou Howard, upon the occasion of his
selection as the inaugural inductee of the Farmingdale State College
Aviation Hall of Fame; he was honored at an inauguration ceremony held
on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Aviation Flight Center, Farming-
dale, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Farmingdale State College Aviation Hall of Fame was
established in August 2012 to honor members of the college community for
outstanding achievement in aviation, and for service, dedication and
commitment to the Farmingdale State College aviation program or the
local aviation industry; and
WHEREAS, Lou Howard is Professor Emeritus and retired Chairman of the
Aerospace Technology Department at Farmingdale State College; and
WHEREAS, One of the pioneers of what was known as the Department of
Aerospace in 1969, Lou Howard is credited with ensuring the development
and success of the then fledgling program, which began with just three
planes and today boasts a fleet of 23 planes, two flight simulators and
a 19,000-square-foot Aviation Center at Republic Airport consisting of
classrooms, aircraft and engine labs, flight operations and briefing
rooms, an aircraft hangar and faculty offices; and
WHEREAS, Lou Howard is widely respected for his expertise; he wrote an
early textbook designed to teach pilots how to fly using instrument
landing systems and was appointed to serve on a federal advisory to help
design the first space shuttle for NASA; to commemorate the 50th anni-
versary of Charles Lindbergh's famous transatlantic flight, he retraced
the flight, landing in Le Bourget field outside Paris, France; and
WHEREAS, Formerly a member of the New York State Assembly, and a
Presiding Officer and member of the Suffolk County Legislature, Lou
Howard was also Mayor of the Village of Amityville; and
WHEREAS, Lou Howard's extraordinary public service extended to the
field of education; he was a teacher at Amityville High School, and
served as its head football coach, coaching nine straight championship
teams; and
WHEREAS, Lou Howard was appointed to the State University of New York
(SUNY) Board of Trustees in 1997 and served as a member for six years;
he is currently on the College Council at SUNY Stony Brook; and
WHEREAS, Former publisher and owner of THE AMITYVILLE RECORD and THE
SUFFOLK COUNTY NEWS, Lou Howard is the author of five books and numerous
technical articles and is well known as a motivational speaker; and
WHEREAS, His achievements of in-depth magnitude have earned him numer-
ous accolades; he has been named to six Halls of Fame, including the
Long Island Sports Hall of Fame, the Springfield College Athletic Hall
of Fame, and National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame
Coach; he was named, also, as one of the Town of Babylon's ten most
influential people of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, Lou Howard received a Bachelor of Science degree from Spring-
field College, a Master's degree from New York University, a Certificate
of Advanced Study from Hofstra University, and a PhD from Western Colo-
rado University; in addition, he served his country for four years in

the United States Army Air Corps and holds numerous advanced flying
ratings; and
WHEREAS, During the entire period of his community service, a period
of constructive involvement, Lou Howard has stood constant in dignity,
good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 64 years, Margaret,
their seven children and their spouses, as well as twenty grandchildren,
and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part
of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Lou Howard upon the occasion of his selection as the inaugural
inductee of the Farmingdale State College Aviation Hall of Fame; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Lou Howard.
