LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Professor Louis Asekoff upon the occa-
sion of his designation as a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship
Award

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community and their profession; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Professor Louis Asekoff upon the occasion of his designation as a recip-
ient of the Guggenheim Fellowship Award; and
WHEREAS, A Professor in English at Brooklyn College, Louis Asekoff was
one of three Brooklyn College professors who were among 175 winners
chosen from nearly 3,000 American and Canadian contenders from the arts,
sciences and humanities; he along with the other two faculty members are
from Brooklyn College's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program;
and
WHEREAS, Louis Asekoff, who taught at Brooklyn College for 42 years,
will turn poems inspired by his journals into a book or possibly two,
called CLERMONT, named after the Columbia County town where he lives;
his award will also go toward the work on a poetry book called THE
VANISHING HAND; and
WHEREAS, Graduating with a B.A. degree in English/Philosophy from
Bowdoin College, and an M.A. degree in English and American Literature
from Brandeis University, Professor Louis Asekoff has written the books
DREAMS OF A WORK and NORTH STAR; his poems have been published in AMERI-
CAN POETRY REVIEW, POETRY, THE NEW YORKER, and other literary publica-
tions; and
WHEREAS, A specialist in modernist and postmodernist poetry, and poet-
ics, Professor Louis Asekoff's awards include the Jerome Shestack Prize,
AMERICAN POETRY REVIEW; in addition, he received an NYFA Fellowship in
1998 and an NEA Fellowship in 1998; and
WHEREAS, A writer of other books and publications, and affiliated
numerous creative works, Professor Louis Asekoff was nominated for the
Pushcart Prize in 2007; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that individuals
who distinguish themselves in their profession, dedicating themselves to
its enhancement and leading it in new directions, are an asset beyond
remuneration and cannot be sufficiently extolled; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Professor Louis Asekoff upon the occasion of his designation as a
recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Professor Louis Asekoff.
