LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Roy Laine upon the occasion of
celebrating his 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Roy Laine upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday, to
be celebrated on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Wading River Fire
House; and
WHEREAS, With his mother being born in Finland and his father in Swed-
en, Roy Laine was born on February 8, 1913; and
WHEREAS, Roy Laine married the late Mary Binger in 1940, and served
during World War II in the United States Navy from 1943-1945; after the
war, he entered civil service; and
WHEREAS, After having served as Postmaster of several different
Offices in Queens, New York, Roy Laine was appointed Postmaster of the
Wading River Post Office, where he served from 1960-1973; and
WHEREAS, Soon, Mary and Roy Laine became members of the Wading River
Congregational Church, where he has served as a deacon and is still an
active participant; he is especially known for singing hymns in a beau-
tiful tenor voice; and
WHEREAS, Although Mary and Roy Laine did not have any biological chil-
dren of their own, they were Godparents to several children, including
Arlene Baer, Walter Binger and the late Dawn Bascomb; today, Roy is a
loving uncle and a wonderful example for at least 19 nieces and nephews,
30 grandnieces and nephews, 37 great-grandnieces and nephews, along with
three great-great-grandnieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with his zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved man has enriched the lives of those around him
through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Roy Laine upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Roy Laine.
