LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring William Greene for 70 years of dedicated
service to the Conesus Volunteer Fire Department

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
acknowledge the significant milestones in the distinguished fire fight-
ing careers of esteemed residents of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
William Greene for his 70 years of service with the Conesus Volunteer
Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout
the Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the ardu-
ous field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great State's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, After a fire burned William Greene's father's store, as well
as half of Main Street in Conesus in 1933, the town purchased a 1934
Dodge Brothers fire truck; William Greene's father was a driver for the
truck; William was allowed to go to the fire hall and ride on the truck
when he was a young teenager; and
WHEREAS, William Greene joined the fire department on March 7, 1943;
shortly thereafter he left to serve with the United States Army during
World War II, returning to Conesus in 1946; and
WHEREAS, Conesus Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated in 1946;
William Greene served on the Board of Directors for a two-year term;
from 1952 to 1956 he continued his service in the roles of Assistant
Chief and Chief; and
WHEREAS, William Greene's dedication to the fire department includes
years of service as a Fire Commissioner; he was appointed as an Interim
Fire Commissioner in 1964 and continued to serve as a Fire Commissioner
until he retired in 2011; during much of that time he served as Chairman
of the Board of Fire Commissioners; and
WHEREAS, William Greene was actively involved in overseeing
construction of the current fire house; he has performed or coordinated
much of the upkeep, repairs and upgrades at the fire house; and
WHEREAS, Demonstrating a strong commitment to community service,
William Greene and his wife, Betty, donated land and were instrumental
in getting playground equipment for Ricky Greene Park, a recreational
area named in honor of their late son; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor William Greene for his 70 years of dedicated service to the Cone-
sus Volunteer Fire Department; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to William Greene.
