LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Chest-
nut Street Elementary School, West Hempstead, New York, on May 16, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions of commitment and high achievement whose purpose
and endeavor have been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the
education of the children of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Chestnut Street Elementary School,
West Hempstead, New York; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious milestone will be celebrated on Thursday, May
16, 2013, with a "Walk Down Memory Lane"; there will be old fashioned
carnival games; music of the early 1900s; historical community exhibits;
a time capsule creation; and a book swap, bring a book/take a book for
all ages; and
WHEREAS, Chestnut Street Elementary School was built in 1912, and is
the oldest of the buildings in the West Hempstead Union Free School
District; and
WHEREAS, It began as a four-room schoolhouse with just 86 children
until 1927, when the district added the back wing; two decades later, a
front portion was constructed, which now serves as the district's admin-
istration building; and
WHEREAS, Chestnut Street Elementary School grounds consist of a base-
ball field and a playground; and
WHEREAS, Today, Chestnut Street Elementary School, which closed in
1967 and reopened its doors in 2001, provides instruction to approxi-
mately 133 students, kindergarten through grade 2; and
WHEREAS, Under the direction of Building Principal Michelle Notti,
Chestnut Street Elementary School is proudly aware of its distinguished
past; eager to fulfill its commitment to parents, students and communi-
ty; and planning with vision and purpose for the ebb and swell of growth
and change it will encounter in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Chestnut Street Elementary
School, West Hempstead, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michelle Notti, Building Principal, Chestnut Street Elementa-
ry School.
