LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Garry VanGorder upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award by the
Boy Scouts of America, Baden-Powell Council

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Garry VanGorder upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2013 Distinguished Citizen Award by the Boy Scouts of America, Baden-Po-
well Council, to be celebrated on Monday, May 20, 2013; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular distinction, Garry VanGorder has contin-
ually demonstrated extreme competence, extraordinary intelligence, and
diligent leadership in his unwavering service to both his community and
profession and consequently has been designated for this most presti-
gious honor; and
WHEREAS, A Cortland County native, Garry VanGorder earned an A.A.S.
degree in journalism from SUNY Morrisville, along with a B.S. degree in
political science from SUNY Oswego; he was named executive director of
the Cortland County Business Development Agency in September of 2009,
after serving eight years as executive director of the Cortland County
Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Garry VanGorder joined the Chamber after three years with the
Metropolitan Development Association in Syracuse, New York; he is a
trustee at Cortland Medical Center and serves on the boards of the
sports council, education foundation, and the downtown partnership; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Garry VanGorder is a past board member of the
Main Street Music Series, the Cortland County United Way, the Cortland
Housing Assistance Council, the Cortland City Youth Bureau, the Cornell
Cooperative Extension and the Cortland City Council; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Garry VanGorder upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award by the Boy Scouts of America,
Baden-Powell Council; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Garry VanGorder.
