LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Big Cross
Street Elementary School in Glens Falls, New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions of commitment and high achievement whose purpose
and endeavor have been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the
education of the children of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commemorate the 100th Anni-
versary of Big Cross Street Elementary School in Glens Falls, New York;
WHEREAS, The mission of the Glens Falls City School District is to
provide a safe, positive and stimulating environment -- one that fosters
self-growth, a passion for continuous learning, confidence and the abil-
ity to succeed in a changing world; the District also promotes excel-
lence through high expectations and evolving standards for students,
staff, parents and the community; in addition, the primary focus is to
reach one's personal best while respecting each person's individuality;
WHEREAS, In the spring of 1911, the Glens Falls City School District
Board of Education and Superintendent Elbert W. Griffith decided to
construct a three-room school on Big Cross Street; Miss Ruth V. Riley
served as the first Principal of Big Cross Street Elementary School when
it opened in the fall of 1912; and
WHEREAS, Miss Riley also taught first grade at Big Cross Street
Elementary School; two other teachers were employed at the school
including Mary E. Mead and Grace M. Rice, who taught first and second
grades, and third and fourth grades, respectively; and
WHEREAS, The schools of a community reflect the character and values
of that community; the residents, school officials, parents, faculty and
students of Big Cross Street Elementary School may, on the occasion of
its 100th Anniversary, take just pride in its history of quality in
leadership, teaching, achievement and community support; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Big Cross Street Elementary School
has expanded its facilities and enrollment; ground was broken in the
spring of 1997 for a new multimedia center (a new library adjoining a
computer lab), five new classrooms and an extension to the gym, along
with many updated mechanical improvements; in the early 2000s, the Big
Cross PTA raised funds to build the new playground, which is in current
use today; and
WHEREAS, Having attended Big Cross Street Elementary School as a
child, Ms. Debbie Hall has ably served as its Principal since 2008; she
currently leads 53 faculty and staff members who serve nearly 250
students in grades K-4; and
WHEREAS, Big Cross Street Elementary School is proudly aware of its
distinguished past; eager to fulfill its commitment to parents, students
and community; and planning with vision and purpose for the ebb and
swell of growth and change it will encounter in the years to come; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor and commend Big Cross Street Elementary School upon the auspicious
occasion of its 100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Debbie Hall, Principal of the Big Cross Street Elementary
School in Glens Falls, New York.
