LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Angela Davis upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Outstanding Student of the Year Award by
the Suffolk Association for Continuing Community Education on June 10,
2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary pursuit of education as adults; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Angela Davis upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Outstanding Student of the Year Award by the Suffolk Association for
Continuing Community Education at its Awards Ceremony to be held on
Monday, June 10, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Suffolk Association for Continuing Community Education
(SACCE) was founded to promote lifelong learning opportunities for
adults within Suffolk County and beyond the county's borders; its
purpose is to advance adult education as a vital factor in adult growth,
development and fulfillment; and
WHEREAS, Through the sharing of resources and ideas with colleagues in
the Nassau Association, and under the umbrella of the New York State
Association, SACCE strives to increase the recognition of and respect
for continuing community education and its professionals; in addition,
it is the goal of the organization to exercise leadership in the advoca-
cy of adult community and continuing education at the local, state and
national levels; and
WHEREAS, In January 2005, Angela Davis came to Huntington Station, New
York from Ecuador with her two sons; in 2009, through the encouragement
of her husband James, she enrolled in The Opening World Program (TOW) to
begin the initial steps to pursue her dreams; and
WHEREAS, It was Angela Davis' goal, once in the United States of Amer-
ica, to educate her sons, acquire a driver's license, become an American
citizen, work in her beloved field of accounting, and have her graduate
degree from Ecuador certified in the United States; and
WHEREAS, After successfully completing full time classes in TOW, Ange-
la Davis acquired her first full time position in data entry; with
determination and persistence, she succeeded in one of her goals, and
received a position as a bank teller in the local Chase Bank; and
WHEREAS, Angela Davis continues to be an inspiration to everyone who
knows her, and has made many of her dreams, by moving to America, come
true; in January of 2013, she became an American citizen, passed her
driver's license test, and as of September 2013, both of her sons will
be in college; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this exemplary young woman is continuing her
pursuit to receive certification in her accounting degree, and is work-
ing towards sponsoring English reading classes for young children in
Ecuador; and
WHEREAS, Angela Davis may now stand with just pride in assessing her
achievements, experiencing the satisfaction of her labors and the joy of
her accomplishments, eager to face the challenge of new ventures; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Angela Davis upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the Suffolk Association
for Continuing Community Education; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Angela Davis.
