LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Syra-
cuse Jewish Community Center

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
organizations within our midst, which have demonstrated consistent
excellence while bringing great pride and enjoyment to the citizens of
our great State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Syracuse Jewish Community
Center; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1861 by the Young Men's Hebrew Association,
the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse is the second oldest Jewish
Community Center in North America; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse is to
enrich Jewish life and the total Jewish Community by developing and
implementing programs for the recreational, educational, cultural, phys-
ical, and social needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, The Jewish Community Center of Syracuse offers membership and
high quality programming to the community at large regardless of reli-
gious preferences; and
WHEREAS, Over the years the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse has
become an incredible community facility, boasting over 2,200 members;
WHEREAS, The Jewish Community Center provides programming for chil-
dren, teens, adults, and senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, The Early Childhood Development Program provides childcare
for over 170 children from six weeks to pre-kindergarten; and
WHEREAS, Youth programs include after school programming for approxi-
mately 100 children a day, including kids night outs, vacation camps,
music lessons, homework assistance, and various classes and activities;
WHEREAS, Summer day camps serve over 600 children from age 6 weeks to
fifteen; and
WHEREAS, The "Syracuse Project 4 Our Teens" strives to enrich the
lives of teens by implementing programs of education, recreation, volun-
teerism, and entertainment for pre-teens and teens by providing school
programming, special events and school holiday excursions; and
WHEREAS, Programs for adults and families include social, cultural,
and educational classes such as Israeli dancing, arts and cultural
series, and a Purim Carnival; and
WHEREAS, Senior adult services include daily kosher nutritional hot
lunch meals, senior fitness classes, interests clubs, a lounge for
activities, along with trips and outings; and
WHEREAS, Health and physical education programming include the schools
of Gymnastics and Dance, Adult Division basketball, badminton, and
volleyball, pre-school division of gymnastics and activity classes, and
youth basketball programs; and
WHEREAS, The facility features the Anne and Hy Miller Family Auditori-
um, the Neulander Family Sports and Fitness Center, the Schayes Family
Gymnasium, an indoor elevated track, a rock climbing room, group exer-
cise classes, and outdoor heated pools; and
WHEREAS, In 2012, the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse opened the
Joshua Ian Davis and Scott Bryan Dubnoff Memorial Playground, and later
that same year the Early Childhood Development Program playgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Located in Dewitt, the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse is
landlord to six other agencies including the Syracuse Hebrew Day School,

The Jewish Community Foundation of CNY, The Jewish Federation of Central
New York, The Jewish War Veterans, and The Jewish Observer, as well as
the Syracuse International Film Festival; and
WHEREAS, The 150th Celebration Event and Annual Meeting on June 6,
2013 will pay tribute to all past presidents and recognize their hard
work and dedication; and
WHEREAS, In celebration of this anniversary, the Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse will be formally renamed the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center of Syracuse; and
WHEREAS, The Central New York community is augmented by the Syracuse
Jewish Community Center; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Syracuse Jewish Community
Center; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Marci Erlebacher, Executive Director of the Jewish Community
Center of Syracuse.
