LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sandra L. Houston upon the occasion of
her retirement after a long and distinguished career in nursing

WHEREAS, Sandra L. Houston, M.A., B.S.N., R.N. and C.N.O.R., was born in
Wilmington, Delaware, to Jepther and Mary Francis Pollard; her father
was a 1st generation American born of Barbadian parents; he stressed the
need of education to his two children and Sandra was always mindful of
this; and
WHEREAS, As a young adult she relocated to New Jersey and finally to
New York to pursue her nursing education; she has lived in Crown Heights
for over 30 years; and
WHEREAS, Sandra Houston attended New York City Community College for
two years then transferred to The Jewish Hospital and Medical Center of
Brooklyn School of Nursing where she completed her R.N. training; she
then attended CUNY Medgar Evers College and earned a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing degree and, four years later, she attended New York Universi-
ty and completed her Master of Science degree in Nursing; and
WHEREAS, Sandra Houston has been employed by Interfaith Medical Center
since 1980; she has worked in the Operating Room and various medical-
surgical units through the restructuring which occurred in the 1990s and
is currently Assistant Head Nurse in the Operating Room; and
WHEREAS, She was, in addition, a valued member of the U.S. Army
Reserves where she taught in the 91 C-LPN Program until her retirement
in 2008; from 1996 until 2002, she was an Adjunct Lecturer at CUNY
Medgar Evers College, where she taught Nursing Research, Leadership and
Management to Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree candidates and Clin-
ical Nursing to LPN students; and
WHEREAS, Sandra Houston has always believed in helping people through
her love of nursing and through sharing the knowledge she has gained
throughout the years; and
WHEREAS, Interfaith Medical Center is well aware that, upon her
retirement, it will lose a loving, caring Professional Nurse who truly
loved her career and will be missed by many; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sandra L. Houston upon the occasion of her retirement after a long
and distinguished career in nursing; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sandra L. Houston.
