LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Mary Calarco-Smith upon the occasion
of being designated an Outstanding Italian American by the Paolo Busti
Cultural Foundation of Genesee County

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals of true purpose and worthy accomplishment that provide
opportunities to celebrate their rich ethnic flavor and which strive to
preserve their cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Mary Calarco-Smith upon the occasion of being designated an Outstanding
Italian American by the Paolo Busti Cultural Foundation of Genesee Coun-
ty, to be celebrated at the 29th Annual Paolo Busti Scholarship Dinner
on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Terry Hills Restaurant in Batavia, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Mary Calarco-Smith's accomplishments include both personal
and professional service to community, church, and family; her life
reflects the core values and heritage of which the Paolo Busti Founda-
tion is based; and
WHEREAS, The second of five children, Mary Calarco was born in Bata-
via, New York, where she still resides, dedicating herself to family,
work, church and volunteering; a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame High
School, she continued her education at the former Bryant and Stratton
Business Institute of Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, Mary Calarco married James F. Smith with whom she
had four children; as her children entered school, she immediately
became involved with their education, after school activities, and for
many years, she Chaired the former Batavia Pageant of Bands; and
WHEREAS, Mary Calarco-Smith received the Service to Mankind Award in
2001, the highest award the Batavia Sertoma Club bestows upon a member
of the community for demonstrating outstanding leadership in the field
of volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, A lifetime member of Resurrection Parish, Mary Calarco-
Smith's faith and church have always been an integral part of her life;
she now serves as an Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan of the Church,
and belongs to St. Joseph's Sodality, as well as St. Padre Pio Altar and
Rosary Society; and
WHEREAS, Active within her community, Mary Calarco-Smith is a member
of St. Jerome Guild, and has served as Treasurer for four years; in
1982, she began volunteering for UMMC Hospital League, and has been the
organization's Co-President since 2010; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Mary Calarco-Smith was on the Paolo Busti Board
of Directors, served on their Scholarship Committee, and has been
involved with the Meals on Wheels Program for over 30 years; and
WHEREAS, When she is not involved with her many family and volunteer
activities, Mary works with her husband in the growth and development of
their funeral home business; she continues to work as office manager of
the H.E. Turner & Co., Bohm-Calar co-Smith, and the Burdett & Sanford
Funeral Homes; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her husband, James, with her throughout have
been her children, Jason (Lori), Justin (Elizabeth), Joshua (Kristin),
and Jenna (Mark), and eight grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Madeline,
Noah, Nicolas, Caleb, Brendan and Gabriella, all of whom feel privileged
to be a part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-

tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Mary Calarco-Smith upon the occasion of being designated an
Outstanding Italian American by the Paolo Busti Cultural Foundation of
Genesee County; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mary Calarco-Smith.
