LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Joan K. Davidson upon the occasion of
receiving the Harold K. Hochschild Award from the Adirondack Museum

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging its
esteemed residents who have distinguished themselves in their community;
and
WHEREAS, Joan K. Davidson will be honored by the Adirondack Museum
with its prestigious Harold K. Hochschild Award, named for its founder,
during its annual Gala Benefit on July 27, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Joan and her family have been involved with Camp Treetops and
North Country School from their inception; and
WHEREAS, She was instrumental in leading the capital campaign which
enabled Protect the Adirondacks to renovate the Paul Schaefer home and
library; and
WHEREAS, Joan served as the chair of the New York State Council on the
Arts from 1975 until 1977; and
WHEREAS, In 1977, she succeeded her father, Jacob M. Kaplan, as Presi-
dent of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, a position she held until 1993; she
returned as trustee and President Emerita in 1995; and
WHEREAS, Under Joan's leadership, the Fund has supported the ADIRON-
DACK EXPLORER, the Adirondack Nature Conservancy, AARCH, and other
Adirondack organizations; and
WHEREAS, She also served as Commissioner of the New York State Depart-
ment of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation; and
WHEREAS, Joan also served as chair of New York's Quadricentennial
Commission; and
WHEREAS, Her tireless dedication to the Adirondacks is in the true
spirit of this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Joan K. Davidson upon the occasion of receiving the Harold K.
Hochschild Award from the Adirondack Museum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Joan K. Davidson.
