LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Lafayette

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of Lafayette Gardens on Saturday, August 11,
2012; and
WHEREAS, Lafayette Gardens was newly constructed at the time in Clin-
ton Hills as a 7.68-acre Brooklyn development; its completion date was
July 31, 1962, and it is bordered by Lafayette, Classon, DeKalb and
Franklin Avenues; and
WHEREAS, Lafayette Gardens is one of 26 Public Housing Developments in
Brooklyn West and has seven buildings, 13, 15, and 20-stories tall, with
880 apartments that provide low income mixed housing options to more
than 2,500 residents of all ages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, This 50-year mark is historic and monumental given the
economic and political factors challenging public housing in New York
City and throughout America, including the elimination of crucial fund-
ing for infrastructure and program services; this is also compounded by
challenged job creation and availability in and around public housing
communities; and
WHEREAS, Lafayette Gardens' Resident Association is a democratically
elected governing body of residents charged with the mission of making a
positive difference in the quality of life for all residents and the
community; the focus of the organization is to provide opportunities to
participate in a multitude of community, educational and recreational
programs, as well as job readiness and training initiatives; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Lafayette Gardens; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Resident Association of Lafayette Gardens.
