LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION paying tribute to Firefighter Daniel Gavin for
his valiant and dedicated service to the Owego Fire Department and his
community

WHEREAS, Citizens across our State and Nation are inspired by and
indebted to our noble firefighters who exhibit courage and bravery every
day in the course of their duties; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring concern and heroic acts of individuals who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, nobly risking
their own lives in an effort to preserve the life and property of anoth-
er; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to pay trib-
ute to Firefighter Daniel Gavin for his valiant and dedicated service to
the Owego Fire Department and his community; and
WHEREAS, On Monday, January 21, 2013, 28-year-old Firefighter Daniel
Gavin of the Owego Fire Department and part of a mutual aid response
team responded to a house fire in Newark Valley, New York; and
WHEREAS, Despite the injuries he sustained, Daniel Gavin continued on,
helping as colleagues from several departments worked to pull a fellow
firefighter from the blaze; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his dedicated service to the Owego Fire
Department, Daniel Gavin serves his community as a Tioga County Sher-
iff's Deputy and Owego Police Officer; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Daniel
Gavin is such a firefighter; throughout his years of devoted service,
this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Firefighter Daniel Gavin has
displayed throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those individuals, such as Firefighter Daniel Gavin, who
perform dangerous and life-threatening firefighting with diligence and
precision; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to pay
tribute to Firefighter Daniel Gavin for his valiant and dedicated
service to the Owego Fire Department and his community; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Firefighter Daniel Gavin.
