LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Marisa Turner upon the occasion of
being ranked No. 1 High Jumper in the nation for Division III colleges

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, Marisa Turner, through her diligence and rigorous efforts,
has achieved the rank of No. 1 High Jumper in the nation for Division
III colleges; and
WHEREAS, Marisa Turner, from Pennellville, New York, graduated from
Phoenix High School in 2012, and now attends St. Lawrence University in
Canton, New York, where she is the recipient of both academic and
achievement scholarships; and
WHEREAS, While in high school, Marisa Turner was a four-sport student
athlete, competing in volleyball, cross-country, and indoor and outdoor
track and field events, serving as captain of each of these teams; and
WHEREAS, Her high school athletic accomplishments earned her the Ron
Woodruff Outstanding Senior Athlete Award and the Doc Jones Athletic
Scholarship; and
WHEREAS, Marisa Turner has furthered her many athletic accomplishments
at St. Lawrence University, where, on December 8, 2012, she broke the
St. Lawrence indoor high jump record, by jumping 5 feet 6 inches, and
was subsequently named St. Lawrence University "Athlete of the Week";
and
WHEREAS, This outstanding young woman, whose passion for her sport,
modesty for her talents, and genuine enjoyment for meeting new people
has achieved unparalleled athletic success; and
WHEREAS, Marisa Turner's perseverance in rising through the ranks of
high jumpers is a strong indication of her ability to master difficult
tasks; her accomplishments will enable her to emerge as a leader, fully
equipped to meet the challenges of today's complex society; and
WHEREAS, Marisa Turner is a credit to her family, her school, her
community, her State and her Nation, and no doubt her future will be
filled with accomplishments of equal importance; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations, in
recognition of the significance of this meritorious achievement, to
congratulate Marisa Turner upon the occasion of being ranked No. 1 High
Jumper in the nation for Division III colleges; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Marisa Turner.
