LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the University of Rochester River
Campus Libraries upon the occasion of its designation as recipient of
the 2014 Academic Library of the Year by the Rochester Regional Library
Council on June 5, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries upon the occasion of
its designation as recipient of the 2014 Academic Library of the Year by
the Rochester Regional Library Council, to be celebrated at its Annual
Meeting on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at Casa Larga, Fairport, New York;
and
WHEREAS, The Rochester Regional Library Council (RRLC) is a multi-type
library network serving libraries and library systems in the five-county
Rochester region of Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Wayne and Wyoming coun-
ties; and
WHEREAS, RRLC provides programs and services that enhance member
library cooperation, service delivery and resource sharing; it also
serves as a forum for the unified representation of library interests
helping members achieve together what could not be achieved separately;
and
WHEREAS, Through RRLC, its members can coordinate and relate their
diverse activities to create a more effective service network to improve
information access for the people of the Rochester region and beyond;
and
WHEREAS, The River Campus Libraries hold more than 3 million books in
both print and electronic formats, over 40,000 active journal titles, as
well as microforms, videos and other formats; and
WHEREAS, The arts, social sciences, and humanities collections are
housed in the Rush Rhees Library, which was designed to serve as a
centerpiece of the River Campus when it was dedicated in 1930; and
WHEREAS, Rush Rhees is home to a number of special libraries and
collections, including the University Archives, Rare Books and Special
Collections, and the Rossell Hope Robbins Library, which specializes in
medieval studies; and
WHEREAS, Anchoring the west side of campus, in the computer studies
building, is the Carlson Science and Engineering Library; furthermore,
collections in support of physics, optics, and astronomy are located in
the POA Library in the Bausch and Lomb Building, and a small reference
library is also sited in the Laboratory for Laser Energetics; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when insti-
tutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries upon the
occasion of its designation as recipient of the 2014 Academic Library of
the Year by the Rochester Regional Library Council on June 5, 2014; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries.
