LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Helen Murphy upon the occasion of
celebrating her 102nd Birthday

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Helen
Murphy upon the occasion of celebrating her 102nd Birthday; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Born on January 31, 1911, in Brooklyn, New York, Helen Murphy
was one of seven children; and
WHEREAS, While she has held many different jobs, Helen Murphy primari-
ly worked as a secretary for the Eastern Steamship Company, the State
Department, Voice of America, and the Texaco Oil Company from which she
retired in 1963; and
WHEREAS, A former resident of Florida, Helen Murphy also worked as a
secretary for the MIAMI HERALD and for a number of community organiza-
tions including the Hallandale Garden Club; and
WHEREAS, As a younger woman, Helen Murphy enjoyed travelling, cruises,
golfing, and bowling, an activity where she's won many trophies and
medals; and
WHEREAS, Helen Murphy has been predeceased by three husbands, Lincoln
Cook, Alan Kurtz and Stanley Murphy; she is a loving and proud mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother; and
WHEREAS, Helen Murphy is a parishioner of Saint Thomas Roman Catholic
Church in Cornwall, New York, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of
America; and
WHEREAS, A resident of the Idlewild Creek Senior Housing Complex in
Cornwall, Helen Murphy enjoys playing cards, reading, knitting, spending
time with her family and participating in Idlewild's many social events;
and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Helen Murphy upon the occasion of her 102nd Birthday; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Helen Murphy.
