LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Village of Port Jefferson upon the
occasion of celebrating their 50th Anniversary of incorporation

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of communities across this great
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Village of Port Jefferson in Suffolk County, New York, upon the
occasion of celebrating their 50th Anniversary of incorporation; and
WHEREAS, A group of citizens decided it was time for the people of
Port Jefferson to take charge of their own destiny and become an auton-
omous community; the vote for incorporation was in December 1962, but
because of court challenges, incorporation did not become official until
April 1963; and
WHEREAS, Port Jefferson was originally called "Drowned Meadow";
today's business district was once a marshland which flooded twice a day
at high tides; in 1655, the Setauket Indians sold the original parcel of
land to Brookhaven settlers, and the beautiful sheltered harbor led to
Drowned Meadow's glory days as a shipbuilding center; and
WHEREAS, The Port Jefferson Marina is one of the North Shore's top
destinations for boaters in the northeast located in the Village of Port
Jefferson; the calm waters of the harbor with a deep draft allow boaters
easy access to local shops, restaurants and year-round entertainment all
within a short walk from the docks; and
WHEREAS, Village Hall was built in 1967, four years after the Village
was incorporated; it houses the clerk's office, mayor's office, village
administrator's office, assessor's office, village justice court, treas-
urer's office, and the code enforcement bureau; and
WHEREAS, The historic Chandlery Building, originally owned by the
Bayles family and part of the original Bayles shipyard was used as a
provisioning store during Port Jefferson's ship building era; one of the
last two standing 19th century structures on the waterfront, the Chan-
dlery was built in 1897 to replace the original Chandlery that burned in
the waterfront fire of that year; and
WHEREAS, Acquired by the Village as part of Harborfront park, this
building is now over 114 years old, and has been completely renovated
and restored to the period using historic photos to replicate the front
porch, windows, rear deck and more; and
WHEREAS, During decades of growth and change, the Village of Port
Jefferson has continued its commitment to enhancing the quality of life
for its residents, ensuring a safe, peaceful and educational climate for
individuals and families, while working toward sustainability; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Village of Port Jefferson in Suffolk County, New York, upon
the occasion of celebrating their 50th Anniversary of incorporation,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Village of Port Jefferson.
