LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Second Assistant Chief Ben Nelson in
recognition of his heroic action in rescuing a man from a burning apart-
ment

WHEREAS, It is the sense of the Legislative Body to recognize and
applaud the caring concern and heroic acts of individuals who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, nobly risking
their own lives in an effort to preserve the life of another; and
WHEREAS, Many firefighters have lost their lives to save the lives of
others; each and every day, they face danger and peril without fear and
perform their job with the utmost concern and professionalism; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Second
Assistant Chief Ben Nelson of the Woodmere Fire Department for his hero-
ic action in rescuing a man from a burning apartment; and
WHEREAS, On the evening of Saturday, March 2, 2013, the Woodmere Fire
Department was called to an apartment building where a tenant reported
seeing smoke; and
WHEREAS, Second Assistant Chief Ben Nelson kicked in the door of a
burning apartment in the building and, without any gear, waded through
two to three feet of debris and brought the 83-year-old resident to
safety; and
WHEREAS, The quick and selfless actions of Second Assistant Chief Ben
Nelson turned what could have been a tragic event into a cause for cele-
bration; and
WHEREAS, Citizens across our State and Nation are inspired by and
indebted to our valiant firefighters who exhibit courage and bravery
every day in the course of their duties; and
WHEREAS, Firefighters exemplify the power of human compassion and the
strength of the American spirit through actions of the most heroic
magnitude; Ben Nelson is one such firefighter; his dedication merits the
tribute and recognition of all citizens of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Through his spontaneous and heroic actions, Second Assistant
Chief Ben Nelson demonstrated his character and his concern for the
welfare of others, personifying, by virtue of his actions, the collec-
tive concern of ordinary people across the community of New York State
who voluntarily respond without the thought of danger or reward when
others are in need of help; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Second Assistant Chief Ben Nelson of the Woodmere Fire Depart-
ment for his heroic action in rescuing a man from a burning apartment;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Second Assistant Chief Ben Nelson.
