LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Alfred E. Smith IV upon the occasion of
his designation as Grand Marshal of the New York City 2013 St. Patrick's
Day Parade

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals of true purpose and worthy accomplishment who work
diligently to preserve and celebrate their rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Alfred E. Smith IV upon the occasion of his designation as Grand Marshal
of the New York City 2013 St. Patrick's Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, In acknowledgment of this most prestigious appointment,
Alfred E. Smith IV will have the honor of leading the 252nd consecutive
New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade up Fifth Avenue on Saturday,
March 16, 2013; and
WHEREAS, New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade marched for the first
time in 1762, 14 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed
in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Parade is regarded
as the most popular of all the Parades in New York City, and honors
Saint Patrick - the patron Saint of the Archdiocese of New York and
Ireland; and
WHEREAS, The New York Parade consists only of marchers and each year
hosts some 250,000 marchers and two million spectators; the Parade has
many outstanding marching bands, bagpipers in marching formations, high
school and college bands from throughout the United States and from all
over the world; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides an opportunity
for people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry;
and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Grand Marshal for the New York City St.
Patrick's Day Parade, Alfred E. Smith IV embodies the spirit and the
cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, Alfred E. Smith IV is the CEO of AE Smith Associates, a firm
he founded in 2009; in December of 2006, he retired from his position as
Managing Director of Bear Wagner Specialists LLC, a specialist and
member firm of the New York Stock Exchange, after 35 successful years on
Wall Street; and
WHEREAS, Alfred E. Smith IV sits on the Boards of The Tony Blair Faith
Foundation, Mutual of America, Genco Shipping and Trading, and Provectus
Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, He is a Senior Advisor for K2 Intelligence and Kroll Bond
Rating Agency; Alfred E. Smith IV also served as Chairman of the Board
of Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers in New York; and
WHEREAS, After attending Iona Prep and Villanova, Alfred E. Smith IV
began his Wall Street career as an independent floor broker on the New
York Stock Exchange; in 1975, he relocated to Chicago to join Mitchell-
Hutchins, where he served as Vice President until 1979, when he returned
to New York and was named Partner of CMJ Partners; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, Alfred E. Smith IV joined Bear Wagner as Managing
Director; he is the great-grandson of the legendary Al Smith, Governor
of New York, and serves as the Director, Secretary, and Dinner Chairman
for the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, as well as Master of Cere-
monies at the annual Alfred E. Smith Foundation Dinner for the past 25
years; and

WHEREAS, Alfred E. Smith IV's work on behalf of charities in New York
and Connecticut is extensive; in addition to his work with the Alfred E.
Smith Memorial Foundation, he serves as Chairman of the Irish Chamber of
Commerce of the USA, Director of the Center for Hope, former Trustee of
Calvary Hospital and has served on the board of St. Vincent's Hospital
in Manhattan since 1986; and
WHEREAS, Alfred E. Smith IV is the Chairman of Hackers for Hope, an
organization he founded in 1988, to raise money for cancer research and
treatment; since its first tournament in 1988, Hackers for Hope has
donated a substantial amount to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,
Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers Comprehensive Cancer Center, and
other organizations committed to finding a cure for and treating cancer;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Alfred E. Smith IV upon the occasion of his designation as Grand
Marshal of the New York City 2013 St. Patrick's Day Parade; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alfred E. Smith IV.
