LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating the benevolent life of Jean Elizabeth
Guthrie, a woman of indomitable spirit and perseverance

WHEREAS, There are certain outstanding members of our community who,
through their selfless commitment and dedication, served to better the
quality of life in their community; Jean Elizabeth Guthrie was one such
individual; and
WHEREAS, Jean Elizabeth Guthrie, of Mumford, New York, died on Wednes-
day, January 2, 2013, at the age of 54, surrounded by the love of her
family and dear friends; and
WHEREAS, A strong woman, beyond the ordinary, and an unforgettable
person of generosity and good will, Jean Elizabeth Guthrie was an insti-
tution unto herself; always the epitome of gracious kindness and
thoughtfulness and never failing to reach out to others; the quintessen-
tial human being; and
WHEREAS, For Jean Elizabeth Guthrie, life was her family, her art, and
her unwavering love for the natural world; her sense of place, home, and
community comprised the core of her being; and
WHEREAS, She was driven by many passions in her life such as art,
photography and most notably, her beloved Big Springs Historical Society
and Museum; and
WHEREAS, Led by Jean Elizabeth Guthrie's tireless efforts, the Big
Springs Historical Society and Museum was transformed into the community
treasure it is today, a home for wonderful art and artifacts, as well as
a place of learning, lectures and community gatherings; and
WHEREAS, One of Jean Elizabeth Guthrie's greatest legacies is her art
which was truly reflective of her love, beauty, grace, charity and
compassion, and will forever stand as a testament of her benevolent
spirit; and
WHEREAS, Known and respected for her advocacy toward all things living
and the fragile environment we share, not a day went by when Jean Eliza-
beth Guthrie did not consider how to protect and enjoy the natural world
she so loved and respected; and
WHEREAS, A valued and involved member of her community, Jean Elizabeth
Guthrie's tireless efforts helped to bring history to life through vari-
ous stories of agricultural roots and local businesses, as well as black
migration from Culpeper, Virginia, which brought many new faces and
talented people to the Mumford community; and
WHEREAS, Jean Elizabeth Guthrie is survived by her devoted husband,
Sean; her loving sons, Conor and Aidan; her mother, Marian Guthrie; and
two sisters, Jackie Guthrie and Elizabeth Guthrie; and
WHEREAS, Jean Elizabeth Guthrie was a woman of values and commitment
whose warm smile and true compassion were generously given for the bene-
fit of her community; she will be deeply missed and truly merits the
grateful tribute of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the benevolent life of Jean Elizabeth Guthrie, to salute her
accomplishments in bettering her community, and to express its deepest
condolences to her family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Jean Elizabeth Guthrie.
