LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Sherill L. Purcell upon the occasion
of her designation as recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by
the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients Network

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those individuals within the medical field who distinguish
themselves through professional excellence and who have made significant
contributions to the quality of life of citizens in the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Sherill L. Purcell upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Distinguished Service Award by the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients
Network to be celebrated at its 22nd Annual Woman of the Year Dinner
Dance Benefit on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at the Grand Prospect Hall,
Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Since 1993, the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients Network
(SCTPN) has recognized medical professionals and individuals who have
dedicated themselves to improving the quality of life for people living
with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sherill L. Purcell was born in Curacao, Netherlands
Antilles, to Grenadian parents who returned to Grenada when she was two
years old; she won a scholarship to attend high school at St. Joseph's
convent, and completed advanced level studies at Presentation Brothers
College before emigrating to America in 1978; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Medgar Evers College, Dr. Sherill L. Purcell
attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey, and completed her residency in Pediatrics at Kings County
Hospital in 1989; and
WHEREAS, In 1994, Dr. Sherill L. Purcell started her private practice,
where she continues to display a tireless love for both medicine and
children, focusing on the paramount importance of parenting and
patience; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sherill L. Purcell has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, For over two decades, Dr. Purcell has been a staff member at
Care for the Homeless, a non-profit organization providing healthcare to
the homeless population; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Sherill L. Purcell has traveled on medical
missions to St. Lucia and Zambia, and has also started a scholarship
fund at the medical school she attended named after her parents, Erymnt-
rude and Francis Purcell; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Dr. Sherill L. Purcell, who have given so
selflessly of their skills and dedication, have proven to be a great
asset to the health and welfare of the citizens of the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
commend and recognize those esteemed individuals and institutions within
the medical community for their extraordinary and sustained contrib-
utions to the progress of medicine and the improvement of life; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Sherill L. Purcell upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the Sickle Cell
Thalassemia Patients Network; and be it further.

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Sherill L. Purcell.
