LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Belle Sylvester upon the occasion of her
retirement after 23 years of distinguished service to the Freeport Memo-
rial Library
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed resi-
dents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Belle Sylvester upon the occasion of her retirement after 23 years of
distinguished service to the Freeport Memorial Library; and
WHEREAS, For the past 23 years, Belle Sylvester rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the Freeport Memorial Library,
earning the admiration, esteem and affection of her colleagues; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as a valued staff member of the library,
Belle Sylvester served with loyalty, honor and distinction, and was
governed by a keen sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of
human problems in her official acts; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Belle Sylvester began her career at the Freeport
Memorial Library; a music lover, she created the Music Advisory Commit-
tee, a group of professional musicians which selects classically trained
performers for free library concerts; and
WHEREAS, Politics has always been an interest to Belle Sylvester; she
served as a court monitor in Nassau County, and volunteered for several
different civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, A vibrant 97 year-old, Belle Sylvester is still active in
numerous associations, including COFRONS, COCA, the Family Community
Center at the Buffalo Avenue complex, and the Task Force on Drugs estab-
lished by the Mayor of Freeport; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Belle Sylvester is a founding member of the
Freeport Human Relations Board, and a volunteer for the Coalition for
Abused Women; currently, she is an active participant of the Ethical
Humanist Society of Long Island, as well as a former member of its Board
of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, Belle Sylvester was honored by both Columbia Artists manage-
ment and former Freeport Mayor William Glacken for bringing the finest
music to the cultural life of Freeport; she also was recognized by the
Long Island Arts Council at Freeport as a Patron of the Arts, and by the
Salvation Army for her community service; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Belle Sylvester has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Belle Sylvester, and to wish her continued success in all her
future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Belle Sylvester.
