LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 145th Anniversary of St. Paul's
Evangelical Lutheran Church

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and Nation to pay tribute
to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to the
ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 145th Anniversary of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church;
and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion was celebrated with a Worship Service
on Sunday, August 17, 2014, followed by a brunch in the church's parish
hall; the Reverend Donald Beck, former Pastor of St. Paul's, was the
guest preacher, and presiding over the worship was the Reverend Phyllis
S. Haynes; and
WHEREAS, While the origins of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
date back to 1858, it wasn't until 1868 that 25 people organized a
congregation and called their first resident pastor; during this time,
Lutheran worship services were held in the Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, After the congregation voted to incorporate on August 17,
1869, its members eagerly began work on their own church building and
just over four months later, it was completed and dedicated; and
WHEREAS, Located on Erie Avenue in Narrowsburg, New York, St. Paul's
Evangelical Lutheran Church has been under the luminous direction of the
Reverend Phyllis S. Haynes since 1995; and
WHEREAS, At present, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church stands
humbly, prayerfully, meditatively and joyfully; and
WHEREAS, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church stands on the thresh-
old of tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades
while retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 145th Anniversary of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran
Church; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Reverend Phyllis S. Haynes, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Narrowsburg, New York.
