LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 19th Anniversary of the Brook-
lyn Chinese-American Association's Avenue U Senior and Community Center
on May 15, 2015
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those organizations which provide essential care and support-
ive services for elderly and disabled people, and serve to enhance the
quality of life for our loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 19th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Chinese-American Associ-
ation's Avenue U Senior and Community Center, to be celebrated on
Friday, May 15, 2015, at Seaport Buffet, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Brooklyn Chinese-American Association (BCA) operates four
senior centers across southern Brooklyn to accommodate the Asian senior
population; BCA's senior centers have developed into common meeting
places where seniors find companionship and engage in a variety of
activities; and
WHEREAS, Established in May of 1996, the Avenue U Senior Center has
enrolled 2,000 members and serves more than 200 senior citizens daily;
and
WHEREAS, The Avenue U Senior and Community Center offers a range of
services and activities some of which include, congregate meals, social
service information, health and nutrition workshops, free medical
screenings and examinations, singing and dance classes, educational
programs and monthly birthday parties and holiday celebrations; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Center coordinates community town hall meet-
ings, assists senior members in meeting their housing needs, promotes
voter registrations and educates the community on the importance of
exercising their voting rights; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization truly enhances the overall quality of
life among the senior population and is an asset within the community it
so ably serves; and
WHEREAS, This significant milestone is an excellent opportunity to
recognize the special contributions of the Avenue U Senior and Community
Center and the dedicated individuals who strive to better the quality of
life for senior citizens in the community; and
WHEREAS, Individuals and organizations devoted to improving the quali-
ty of life for others, enabling them to build lives of dignity and self-
worth are deserving of the highest praise and recognition; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Avenue U Senior and Community Center is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its staff, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves;
and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 19th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Chinese-American Asso-
ciation's Avenue U Senior and Community Center on May 15, 2015; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Avenue U Senior and Community Center, Brooklyn, New York.
