LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Dan Farrell, legendary NEW
YORK DAILY NEWS photographer, distinguished citizen, and devoted member
of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavors
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is deeply saddened to public-
ly mourn the death of Dan Farrell, legendary NEW YORK DAILY NEWS photog-
rapher, distinguished citizen, and devoted member of his community; and
WHEREAS, Dan Farrell of Oceanside, New York, died on April 13, 2015,
at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Dan Farrell grew up with his
family in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, A renowned photographer, Dan Farrell spent his entire career
at NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, and was responsible for some of the newspaper's
most memorable pictures; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man is best known for capturing the iconic
image of a young John F. Kennedy Jr. saluting his father's coffin after
the President's funeral mass in Washington, D.C., in 1963; his talent
and ability to capture this historic moment earned him a Pulitzer Prize
nomination; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dan Farrell was assigned to the famous Beatles
concert at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965, where he was able to docu-
ment the hysteria and energy of Beatlemania, which is now part of our
American history; and
WHEREAS, Dan Farrell retired in 1995 to his home in Oceanside, leaving
behind an impressive career filled with many notable achievements; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Mary, Dan Farrell is
survived by his five children, Dan, Lynn, Kathy, Christine, and Mary,
all of whom feel privileged to have been a part of his extraordinary
life; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Dan Farrell leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Dan Farrell, legendary NEW YORK DAILY NEWS photogra-
pher, distinguished citizen, and devoted member of his community; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the children of Dan Farrell.
