LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Jacques Levine, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Jacques Levine, a 78 year resident of Middletown, New York,
died on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, The son of the late Falk and Esther Levine, Jacques Levine
was born on September 4, 1922, in New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, Jacques Levine came to Middletown, New York in 1936, when he
and his family moved to the area to open Middletown Footwear; he was a
graduate of Middletown High School in the Class of 1940, and went on to
earn a degree from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in
1943; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his studies, Jacques Levine honorably
served in the United States Army during the second World War; following
his time in the Army, he returned to Middletown to help his father
manage and operate the family business; and
WHEREAS, Middletown Footwear was first located off Fulton Street, but
for the majority of its decades of operation, it was on Railroad Avenue;
the company manufactured women's shoes and slippers and its products
were shipped all over the world; and
WHEREAS, Jacques Levine distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, On September 2, 1944, Jacques Levine married his wife,
Florence, and together they raised four beautiful children; and
WHEREAS, Jacques Levine's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Known throughout the mid-Hudson for his community service
just as much as his success in footwear manufacturing, Jacques Levine
was a member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai, and was a Scout-
master of Troop 60, Boy Scouts of America for more than three decades;
he was also a member of the Board of Gomez Mill House Foundation in
Marlboro, New York; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he recently retired from the Board of the Orange
County Land Trust where he was honored; he was named to the Footwear
News Hall of Fame in 1998, was a member of the Middletown University
Club and taught the ENCORE Program at SUNY Orange; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his wife, Florence, son, Harold, and sister,
June, Jacques Levine is survived by two sons, Alan (Alison) and David
(Sherrie); a daughter, Minna (Ronald); daughter-in-law, Carol; his dear
companion, Paula; eight grandchildren, Rachel (Matthew), Eric (Saman-
tha), Emily (Matthew), Malcolm (Melissa), Sam, Benjamin, Aaron and
Miriam; five great-grandchildren, Harrison, Liv, Henry, Hadley and Ace;
and many nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Jacques Levine leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Jacques Levine, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Jacques Levine.
