LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Sam Moelis upon the occasion of
capturing the World Title at the International Fencing Federation's 2015
Cadet and Junior Championships

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the State of New York who, by
achieving outstanding success in athletic competition, have inspired and
brought pride to their school and community; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Sam Moelis upon the occasion of capturing the 17-and-under World
Title at the International Fencing Federation's 2015 Cadet and Junior
Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan; and
WHEREAS, Sam Moelis, a junior at Lynbrook High School, brought home
the 2015 Cadet World Championship in foil with an extraordinary perform-
ance in the 17-and-under age group: and
WHEREAS, This remarkable young athlete began his fencing career taking
lessons in the basement or his father's synagogue, Temple Beth Emeth, in
Hewlett Harbor, New York; he progressed quickly studying under an Olym-
pic fencer, and later commuted to Brooklyn to practice and learn from
other masters of the sport; and
WHEREAS, In 2014, Sam Moelis won the Division I National Championship
at 16, becoming one of the youngest fencers to take home the United
States' top honor; he went on to compete in the Junior Olympics in Salt
Lake City, finishing in the top eight and receiving the highest rating
possible for an American fencer; and
WHEREAS, Sam Moelis's overall fencing record is outstanding; he has
been loyally and enthusiastically supported by family, fans, friends and
the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, this
young man now stands honorably, with just pride in his accomplishments
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by his teachers, coaches
and parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Sam Moelis upon the occasion of capturing the World Title
at the International Fencing Federation's 2015 Cadet and Junior Champi-
onships; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sam Moelis.
