LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John J. Dougherty, Jr. posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation for special recognition by Rensselaer
County at its Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Ceremony on June 8, 2015
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend these
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John
J. Dougherty, Jr. posthumously upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on Monday, June 8, 2015; and
WHEREAS, In June of 1993, a committee was formed by the Rensselaer
County Veterans Bureau known as the Rensselaer County Honor-A-Veteran
Committee to honor deceased Rensselaer County veterans who have served
their country in time of conflict; and
WHEREAS, For his courageous and dedicated service to his country, John
J. Dougherty, Jr. will be recognized at this year's June Honor-A-De-
ceased Veteran Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, John J. Dougherty, Jr., who died in 2010, at the age of 86,
served his country with honor and distinction from September 8, 1942
through December 27, 1945, as a member of the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, A Seaman 1st Class on the USS Texas and USS Quincy (CA-71),
John J. Dougherty, Jr. was awarded the Victory Medal, American Campaign,
European Theater--2 Stars, Asiatic-Pacific--2 Stars, and Good Conduct
Medal; and
WHEREAS, Born to John J. Dougherty, Sr. and Helen F. Dougherty, John
J. Dougherty, Jr. attended both St. Patrick's Grammar School and
Lasalle High School, Troy, New York; he married the former Eileen
Gentlemen on December 13, 1949; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, John J. Dougher-
ty, Jr. worked at Norton Industrial Abrasives, Watervliet, New York; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Troy, New York, John J. Dougherty, Jr.
held the position of Commander of VFW Post 469, and was a member of both
the VFW Post Poestenkill and Veterans of Lansingburgh; and
WHEREAS, In his spare time, John J. Dougherty, Jr. enjoyed hunting,
fishing, archery, scuba diving, carpentry, gardening, and raising pheas-
ants; he was also a member of the North Troy Stag Rod and Gun Club; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John J. Dougherty, Jr. posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-
Deceased Veteran Ceremony on June 8, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of John J. Dougherty, Jr.
