LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Canter for Cancer upon the occasion of
reaching its goal of raising $1,000,000 to benefit the American Cancer
Society, and commemorating its 42nd Awards Dinner on November 23, 2014

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Canter for Cancer upon the occasion of reaching its goal of raising
$1,000,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society, and to commemorate
its 42nd Awards Dinner which was celebrated on Sunday, November 23,
2014, at the Byrncliff Resort and Conference Center, Varysburgh, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Canter for Cancer began in 1973, when Janice Wietz, a former
English teacher at Pioneer Central School, approached Richard D. Tilton,
Charter President of the Pioneer Jaycees (Jr. Chamber) about coordinat-
ing a walk-a-thon to benefit the American Cancer Society; and
WHEREAS, That same year, the inaugural Canter for Cancer Walk was held
bringing together students, teachers, and members of the community from
all walks of life to unite for the common goal of helping those
afflicted with all forms of cancer; and
WHEREAS, For over four decades, this esteemed organization has contin-
ued to work tirelessly to raise funds for the American Cancer Society by
partnering with local schools, businesses, and civic-minded groups to
donate thousands of dollars into research for a cure; and
WHEREAS, With the help of its event's numerous participants, organiz-
ers and sponsors, Canter for Cancer has achieved its worthy goal of
raising $1,000,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society, helping the
over one million people in the United States diagnosed with cancer each
year; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Chairman Richard D. Tilton,
Canter for Cancer has demonstrated the value of schools, businesses and
community organizations working together to support an important cause;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when associ-
ations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Canter for Cancer upon the occasion of reaching its goal of
raising $1,000,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society, and to
commemorate its 42nd Awards Dinner; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Richard D. Tilton, Chairman, Canter for Cancer.
