LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Greek
Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection on May 15, 2015

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in commemorating the
10th Anniversary of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection,
to be celebrated on Friday, May 15, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The focus of the community of the Greek Orthodox Church of
the Holy Resurrection has always been its children; its youth commission
strives to involve the youth of our parish in various religious, social,
cultural and athletic activities and promote parish youth programs; and
WHEREAS, The Little Angels program is geared for newborns to three
years, including unborn babies and their caregivers; participants meet
at church for play, mat time, stories, and takes trips to places such as
the Martin Viette Fall Festival, Long Island Children's Museum, Holy
Cross monastery candle making, and Nassau County Art Museum, as well as
a biennial moms/caregivers night; and
WHEREAS, Children ages four, five, and six are invited to join the
Holy Orthodox Primary Education (HOPE) ministry; the four elements of
worship, fellowship, service, and witness will be integrated into the
program, and meetings will involve prayer, mini-lessons with movement
and discussion, arts and crafts, snack, and play time; and
WHEREAS, Junior Orthodox Youth (JOY) is the ministry for children of
the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America from ages 7-12; students meet
once a month to focus on their faith, make arts and crafts and/or engage
in a social outing and play sports such as soccer and basketball, and
participate in the Olympics during the Memorial Day weekend; and
WHEREAS, The goal of GOYA ministry is for teenagers to explore the
Orthodox faith, tradition and life; fellowship opportunities are
provided by many social, community service, and athletic events; and
WHEREAS, Sunday School is an integral part of the church's mantra to
mold children from the age of three to 18, into the role of an Orthodox
Christian; and
WHEREAS, The Holy Resurrection Greek School Program offers a compre-
hensive program of Greek education for children of all ages, from begin-
ner through the Regents level; students are placed in levels in accord-
ance with their knowledge of the Greek language rather than grades
according to their age, which allow them to learn at their own speed;
and
WHEREAS, The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection proudly
sponsors Boy Scout Troop No. 72 and Cub Scout Pack No. 72; and
WHEREAS, There are many other ministries through which adults can
serve the Church and their community, including the Greek Orthodox
Ladies Philoptochos Society, Inc., which is a duly accredited women's
philanthropic society of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America; its
mission is to aid the needy, undertake the burial of impoverished
persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the
Church through fund raising efforts; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the society promotes the purposes of the Greek
Orthodox Archdiocese of America, preserves and perpetuates Orthodox
Christian concepts and the Orthodox Christian Family, and encourage

participation in the activities of the Greek Orthodox community, with
the cooperation of the Parish Priest and the Parish Council; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of President of the Parish Council, Kirk
C. Demou, and Chairman of the Parish Council, the members of the Greek
Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection continue to fulfill the hopes
and aspirations of past generations who came to America to pursue their
dreams, and remain firm in their resolve to maintain their Orthodox
faith and their Greek heritage not only in present time but for tomorrow
and future generations to come; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Greek Orthodox Church of the
Holy Resurrection, fully confident that this commemoration reflects the
belief in those values which enhance the dignity and purpose of life;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kirk C. Demou, President, Parish Council, and James K. Xant-
hos, Chairman, Parish Council.
