LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dante J. Orsini Sr. posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dante J. Orsi-
ni Sr. posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate, to be celebrated at the Honor-A-Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at the County Building in Ballston
Spa, New York; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on May 29, 1920, in South Glens Falls, New York, Dante
J. Orsini Sr. was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy, and studied
accounting at LaSalle University; and
WHEREAS, In May of 1940, Dante J. Orsini Sr. began proudly serving his
country as a member of the United States Marine Corps; and
WHEREAS, Following the completion of his training, Dante J. Orsini Sr.
was chosen to attend the Marine Corps Institute in Washington, D.C.
where he was chosen to serve with the White House and United States
Capitol Honor and Security Guard; and
WHEREAS, During this time, Dante J. Orsini Sr. was on hand at Franklin
Delano Roosevelt's fourth inauguration, and also accompanied the Presi-
dent on trips to Warm Springs, Georgia, as well as on many other notable
and historic occasions; and
WHEREAS, In 1943, Dante J. Orsini Sr. achieved the esteemed rank of
Sergeant Major, holding the distinction of being the youngest soldier to
receive this rank at the time; he later surrendered a commission in the
USMRC in order to return to active duty and serve alongside his fellow
Marines in the 11th Battalion during the Battle of Okinawa; and
WHEREAS, Following the Japanese surrender, Dante J. Orsini Sr. was
transferred to Beijing, China, to help defend the capitol from Communist
forces; he was awarded the Order of the Cloud and Banner by Chiang Kai-
Shek in recognition of his courageous actions; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of military service in February of 1946,
Dante J. Orsini Sr. returned to South Glens Falls where he married his
wife, Hazel, and became the proud father of four children; he also
accepted a position at Scott Paper, where he worked his way up through
several management positions before retiring after 32 years of distin-
guished service; and
WHEREAS, With a sense of civic responsibility, Dante J. Orsini Sr.
held several elected positions in the Village of South Glens Falls, and
served as a Staff Assistant to Congressman Gerald Solomon from 1983 to
1999; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dante J. Orsini Sr. was a member of such commu-
nity organizations as the South Glens Falls Chamber of Commerce, Rotary
Club, Saratoga Economic Opportunity Council, Glens Falls Youth Center,
and the American Red Cross; he was also a Chair at the Glens Falls
National Bank Board; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Dante J. Orsini Sr. demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dante J. Orsini Sr. posthumously upon the occasion of his desig-
nation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon
an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Dante J. Orsini Sr.
