LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Ladies
Society of the Plattduetsche Retirement Home on April 19, 2015
WHEREAS, Senior citizens planted the seeds that made our communities
grow and prosper; their past contributions and future participation are
a vital part of, and valuable asset to, the fabric of community life;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of organizations which provide essential care and supportive
services for elderly and disabled people, and serve to enhance the qual-
ity of life for our loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Ladies Society of the Plattduetsche
Retirement Home; this momentous occasion was celebrated with a Dinner
Dance on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant,
Franklin Square, New York; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1915, the Ladies Society of the Plattduetsche
Retirement Home was formed to enhance the residents' quality of life in
the Plattduetsche Retirement Home, a housing complex located in Franklin
Square for those 65 years and older; the development, owned by the non-
profit organization Plattduetsche Home Society, began as a retirement
home for poor immigrants from Germany but is now available to all; and
WHEREAS, Conveniently located within walking distance of various busi-
nesses and restaurants, the Plattduetsche Retirement Home has two cars
and a 12-passenger van which provide scheduled free trips to the green-
grocer, supermarket and Roosevelt Field, among other places; the facili-
ty also provides transportation for medical appointments; and
WHEREAS, The Plattduetsche Retirement Home is beautifully maintained
and provides its residents with a geriatric case manager who runs infor-
mational sessions on such topics as memory loss and over-the-counter
medications; in addition, a physical therapist, podiatrist, psychiatrist
and medical doctors visit the development regularly; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, residents who have recently been discharged from
the hospital can convalesce in the sickbay area which is constantly
monitored by a nurse's aide; and
WHEREAS, The Plattduetsche Retirement Home also has a recreational
director, and the Ladies Society organizes fundraisers, holiday parties
and monthly birthday celebrations; the development's other activities
include crafts, bingo, movies, word games and trips to such locations as
Lido Beach, Atlantic City, the Amish Country and dinner theaters; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Ladies Society of the Plattduetsche
Retirement Home is in direct correlation to the efforts of its members,
whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impres-
sive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard
of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Ladies Society of
the Plattduetsche Retirement Home; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize
organizations which faithfully serve the needs of the community and its
citizens with diligence and compassionate commitment to improving the
quality and dignity of life in the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Ladies Society of the Platt-
duetsche Retirement Home on April 19, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Wendy Westerfeld, President of the Ladies Society of the
Plattduetsche Retirement Home, Franklin Square, New York.
