LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Debbie Shichtman upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition by the League of Women Voters
of Port Washington-Manhasset on May 31, 2015

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Debbie
Shichtman upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset, to be cele-
brated on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at the Swan Club, Roslyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Debbie Shichtman has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; she is being honored during this
most auspicious occasion in recognition of her 46 years of outstanding
service to the League and the Greater Community; and
WHEREAS, Community activist and leader, Dr. Debbie Shichtman has
served as President of the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Great Neck,
Co-President of the LWV of Nassau County, on the Board of the LWV of New
York State and currently on the Board of the LWV of Port Washington-Man-
hasset; and
WHEREAS, Throughout nearly five decades of service to LWV, Dr. Debbie
Shichtman moderated candidate forums, edited the LWV of Nassau County
Voter's Guide, and chaired studies on Charter Schools, Alternate Energy
and Water on Long Island; she also worked with the Board of Elections on
a new voting machine project and frequently coordinated and monitored
the Town of North Hempstead Housing Authority Tenants Election; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her steadfast and unwavering service to the
League of Women Voters, Dr. Debbie Shichtman has devoted her energies to
support gifted and disadvantaged children; and
WHEREAS, Currently a resident at the Amsterdam at Harborside in Port
Washington, Dr. Debbie Shichtman continues her fight for the environ-
ment; she was instrumental in preventing the construction of a garbage
facility adjacent to the protected marshland in Hempstead Harbor, and
coordinated a petition in support of a Water Compact on Long Island; and
WHEREAS, Active within the community, Dr. Debbie Shichtman has served
on the Election Committee, and is currently on the Public Affairs
Committee at the Amsterdam at Harborside; she was secretary of the Great
Neck/Manhasset Community Child Care Partnership and was a member of the
National Society of Gifted and Talented Children where she helped insti-
tute programs for gifted children in Nassau and Suffolk schools; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Debbie Shichtman earned her bachelor's degree from
Barnard College, her MSW from Columbia University School of Social Work,
and an Ed.D. from Columbia University Teachers College; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Dr. Debbie
Shichtman was honored by the LWV of Nassau County for her years of
public service, and in 2003, the Town of North Hempstead placed her on
their Women's Roll of Honor; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dr. Debbie Shichtman has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Debbie Shichtman has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Debbie Shichtman upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-
Manhasset on May 31, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Debbie Shichtman.
