LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Nassau
County Museum of Art on June 13, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality of
life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by its
exceptional cultural, educational and recreational institutions; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 25th Anniversary of the Nassau County Museum of Art, to be
celebrated at its 2015 Museum Ball, Midnight in Paris, on Saturday, June
13, 2015; and
WHEREAS, In 1919, Henry Clay Frick, the co-Founder of U.S. Steel,
purchased the property once owned by the poet and preservationist,
William Cullen Bryant, for his son, Childs Frick; renowned architect Sir
Charles Carrick Allom was commissioned to redesign the facade and much
of the interior of the home which was named Clayton; and
WHEREAS, Childs Frick and his wife, Frances, lived at Clayton for
almost 50 years; following his death in 1965, the estate was purchased
by Nassau County which then converted it to a museum, now the Nassau
County Museum of Art; and
WHEREAS, In 1989, the Museum became a private not-for-profit institu-
tion, and is governed and funded by a private board of trustees which
includes many of Long Island's most prominent business, civic and social
leaders; and
WHEREAS, One of the major cultural institutions on Long Island, the
Nassau County Museum of Art welcomes 200,000 visitors, including 20,000
school children each year; and
WHEREAS, The Nassau County Museum of Art is located about 25 miles
east of New York City in Roslyn Harbor, Long Island on the former Frick
Estate, a spectacular property in the heart of Long Island's fabled Gold
Coast; and
WHEREAS, The main museum building, named in honor of art collectors
and philanthropists Arnold and Joan Saltzman, is a three-story Georgian
mansion which exemplifies Gold Coast architecture of the late 19th
century; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the Arnold and Joan Saltzman Fine Art build-
ing, the Nassau County Museum of Art includes the Sculpture Park and
Formal Garden of historic importance, as well as the Pinetum, an archi-
tecturally-significant restored trellis, rare specimen trees, and marked
walking trails; and
WHEREAS, The Nassau County Museum of Art is dedicated to fostering a
deep understanding of the arts, with particular emphasis on the 19th,
20th and 21st centuries, and to keeping an active schedule of exhibi-
tions and educational programs for people of all ages and backgrounds;
and
WHEREAS, Ranked among the Nation's largest, most important suburban
art museums, the Nassau County Museum of Art preserves, enhances, and
interprets its collections for the people of Long Island, the State of
New York, and beyond; and
WHEREAS, The expert staff of the Nassau County Museum of Art, are and
always have been characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence, and according-
ly merit the commendation of this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when insti-
tutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Nassau County Museum of Art; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Nassau County Museum of Art.
