LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 250th Anniversary of Glendoug-
las Farm on June 20, 2015
WHEREAS, Agriculture is an important part of the foundation upon which
our distinct American and New York State heritage are built and remains
the number one industry in New York State; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality of life in the communities across this great State of New
York is enriched by the many New York farm families whose hard work and
ingenuity maintain and improve our food and fiber supply for countless
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 250th Anniversary of Glendouglas Farm, to be celebrated on
Saturday, June 20, 2015; and
WHEREAS, In 1765, William Douglas purchased land in what was then
known as Jericho in Western Massachusetts, and moved there with his
young family; he built a log cabin and set to work farming; and
WHEREAS, During this time, when the Colonists revolted against Great
Britain, William Douglas enlisted in the Massachusetts Militia and Jeri-
cho changed its name to Hancock; Douglas fought at the Battle of
Bennington, and upon the completion of his military service, he returned
to his farm; and
WHEREAS, After the Revolution succeeded, New York negotiated with the
states on its eastern edge, and the border of Hancock was pushed three
quarters of a mile east, putting half of William Douglas' farm in Steph-
entown, New York; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, heirs to William Douglas' farm replaced
the log cabin with a colonial which, when it burned down in 1967, was
replaced with the present structure which retains the basement of the
original log cabin; and
WHEREAS, In the course of its 250-year history, due to the presence of
several female heirs, the Glendouglas Farm owners' last names have
changed; although the types of farming have also changed, the farm has
remained a family hub; and
WHEREAS, Today, Glendouglas Farm is owned by Isabel Krebs, the great-
great-great-great-granddaughter of William Douglas; she maintains a vast
tree farm and raises llamas, alpacas and poultry; and
WHEREAS, The proud heritage of the Glendouglas Farm continues to
change and expand with the times, and the farm is poised for success for
many years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Glendouglas Farm on June 20, 2015;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Isabel Krebs, Glendouglas Farm, Stephentown, New York.
