LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 125th Anniversary of THE DAILY
STAR on July 18, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 125th Anniversary of THE DAILY STAR, to be celebrated on
Saturday, July 18, 2015; and
WHEREAS, On June 19, 1890, Harry W. Lee published the first edition of
what was originally called THE ONEONTA STAR, an independent morning
newspaper devoted to the interests of Oneonta and the Susquehanna
Valley; the name of the newspaper was changed to THE DAILY STAR on
Monday, May 27, 1974; and
WHEREAS, Based in Oneonta, New York, THE DAILY STAR is a daily morning
newspaper that circulates in a four-county area in central New York
state; the Greater Oneonta area is found in the northwestern section of
the Catskill Mountains in the Susquehanna River valley, approximately
midway between Albany and Binghamton; and
WHEREAS, With a circulation of more than 12,000 newspapers Monday
through Saturday, THE DAILY STAR also publishes a weekly newspaper in
Cooperstown, THE COOPERSTOWN CRIER; a monthly entertainment guide, THE
O-TOWN SCENE; a tourism-driven publication three times per year, UPSTATE
LIFE, and numerous specialty sections throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, THE DAILY STAR and COOPERSTOWN CRIER are owned by Community
Newspaper Holdings, Inc., a parent company for daily, weekly and semi-
weekly newspapers published in more than 200 communities throughout the
United States; and
WHEREAS, For more than a century, THE DAILY STAR has remained stead-
fast to its mission, delivering to its readers significant news affect-
ing their daily lives and featuring in-depth news reports of key local
and regional issues; stories on regional business trends; complete
sports coverage; specialty reports on schools, health and higher educa-
tion; and lifestyle reports chronicling area entertainment events and
local social events; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, THE DAILY STAR reports on aspects of hometown
life important to its readers while providing merchants large and small
with an efficient vehicle to promote their goods and services; and
WHEREAS, Our newspapers provide a tremendous service to citizens
across the State of New York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State and Nation is strengthened by a
responsible citizenry which is actively engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and
WHEREAS, As THE DAILY STAR moves into the future, it carries with it
the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history and an outstanding
record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of THE DAILY STAR on July 18, 2015;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to THE DAILY STAR.
