LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. Marsha Weissman upon the occasion
of her retirement after many years of distinguished service to the
Center for Community Alternatives on June 15, 2015
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Dr. Marsha
Weissman upon the occasion of her retirement after many years of distin-
guished service to the Center for Community Alternatives to be cele-
brated with a party held in her honor on Monday, June 15, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The founder and Executive Director of the Center for Communi-
ty Alternatives (CCA), Marsha Weissman holds a Ph.D. in Social Science
from the Maxwell School of Citizenship, Syracuse University; and
WHEREAS, CCA provides alternatives to incarceration and reentry
programs for adults and youth in the juvenile and criminal justice
systems; Justice Strategies, CCA's policy division, draws upon CCA's
direct service experience to advance justice system reform; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Marsha Weissman is the author of several publications
including: UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF REENTRY THROUGH REINTEGRATIVE
JUSTICE in Immarigeon and Fehr (eds.), Pathways for Offender Reentry,
American Correctional Association, 2012; THE USE OF CRIMINAL HISTORY
RECORDS IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS: RECONSIDERED; ASPIRING TO THE IMPRACTICA-
BLE: ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION IN THE ERA OF MASS INCARCERATION, NYU
LAW SCHOOL REVIEW OF LAW AND SOCIAL CHANGE 2009, CONTRADICTIONS AND
CHALLENGES: CAN COMMUNITY JUSTICE INITIATIVES AVOID CO-OPTATION? in
Nagel and Asumah (eds.), Prisons and Punishment: Reconsidering Global
Penality, Africa World Press, 2006; and PRELUDE TO PRISON: YOUTH
PERSPECTIVES ON THE SCHOOL-TO-PRISON PIPELINE was published by Syracuse
University Press in November 2014; and
WHEREAS, Presently, Dr. Marsha Weissman serves on the New York State
Council on Community Re-Entry and Reintegration, and in the past has
served on the Executive Committee of "Work for Success," an initiative
created by Governor Cuomo to improve employment prospects for people
with criminal history records; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, Dr. Marsha Weissman and youth from CCA's juvenile
justice programs testified before the U.N. Committee to End Racial
Discrimination about disparities in the U.S. juvenile justice system;
and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman was also a member of the New York State
Task Force on Transforming Juvenile Justice and now serves on the Syra-
cuse City School District Task Force to Revise the Code of Conduct;
currently, she is on the Boards of the New York State Defenders Associ-
ation and the National HIRE Network, and is on the Coordinating Commit-
tee for the Dignity in Schools Campaign; furthermore, she is a past
Board member of the Sentencing Project; and
WHEREAS, As founder and Executive Director, Dr. Marsha Weissman
rendered faithful, conscientious and valuable service to CCA; and
WHEREAS, She served with loyalty, honor and distinction, and was
governed by a keen sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of
human problems, which earned her the admiration, esteem and affection of
her colleagues; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Marsha Weissman upon the occasion of her retirement after
many years of distinguished service to the Center for Community Alterna-
tives, and to wish her well in all her future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Marsha Weissman.
