LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Lorraine LoFrese Conlin upon the occa-
sion of being named the 2015-17 Nassau County Poet Laureate on June 20,
2015

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to honor and recog-
nize those individuals whose commitment and creative talents contribute
to the cultural enrichment of their communities and of the entire State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Lorraine LoFrese Conlin upon the occasion of being named the 2015-17
Nassau County Poet Laureate by the Nassau County Poet Laureate Society,
to be celebrated with an Installation Ceremony on Saturday, June 20,
2015, at the Farmingdale Public Library, Farmingdale, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Nassau County Poet Laureate Society was established in
2005 to encourage discovery of the poetic voice, to elevate appreciation
for the written word, and to enrich the lives of poets and residents of
Nassau County and the greater Long Island community through the art of
poetry; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Wantagh, New York, Lorraine LoFrese Conlin
works as a United States Customs Broker at John F. Kennedy International
Airport; and
WHEREAS, With a true passion for writing, Lorraine LoFrese Conlin, in
her private life, dedicates herself to the discipline of poetry and the
expression of her imagination; she has an extraordinary ability to
reconcile feelings and ideas with words; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Lorraine LoFrese Conlin served as membership direc-
tor for the Long Island Writers' Guild; during this time, she began
writing poetry and publishing her poems in various anthologies and
online publications; she will publish her first book of poetry entitled,
COLLAGE, at the end of this summer; and
WHEREAS, Lorraine LoFrese Conlin reads her poems in a number of venues
and is on the Board of Directors of the Bards; she is the Events Coordi-
nator of Performance Poets Association and hosts poetry readings at Sip
This in Valley Stream as well as the Bellmore Bean Cafe; and
WHEREAS, In addition to hosting countless events, Lorraine LoFrese
Conlin attends the Long Island Poetry Collective Workshop and is an
active member of the East End Poetry group in Southampton; she also
founded Long Island Poets for Darfur and held readings at Hofstra
University and the Conklin Barn in Huntington to raise awareness of the
war and genocide in Darfur; and
WHEREAS, Active within her community, Lorraine LoFrese Conlin is
involved in the Huntington Long Island Poetry Collective and mentors
several young Long Island Poets, featuring them, motivating and inspir-
ing them to write; she also founded Formal Night, known as "The Poets
Prom," a celebration of form poetry; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion represents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Lorraine LoFrese
Conlin, the 5th Nassau County Poet Laureate, for her invaluable contrib-
utions to the Art and Culture of Nassau County; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals who add strength, vigor and inspiration to the
cultural diversity and quality of life in the communities of the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts of
our Nation, to honor our artists, and to express our appreciation to
everyone who patronizes the arts; and as we celebrate the arts, we cele-

brate and give thanks to our American freedom, the only atmosphere in
which artists can truly create and in which art is truly the expression
of the soul; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Lorraine LoFrese Conlin upon the occasion of being named the
2015-17 Nassau County Poet Laureate on June 20, 2015, and to wish her
continued success in all of her future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Lorraine LoFrese Conlin.
