LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring David I. Marshall of Baldwin Harbor, New
York, for his courageous military service during World War II

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
90-year-old David I. Marshall of Baldwin Harbor, New York, for his
courageous service during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Born in Manhattan, New York, David I. Marshall proudly served
his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II;
and
WHEREAS, A mortar crew member with the 84th Infantry Company, David I.
Marshall was among the approximately 600,000 Americans involved in the
Battle of the Bulge where he stood bravely against the Nazi onslaught,
and helped drive German forces out of Belgium; and
WHEREAS, After the Battle of the Bulge, this brave serviceman was
further ordered to cross the Belgian border and take part in operations
to invade Germany; and
WHEREAS, During this time, David I. Marshall took part in crossing the
highly contested Roer River, whose bridges and dams had been destroyed;
he bravely moved with his unit across pontoon bridges, risking German
fire, to help liberate towns on the other side; and
WHEREAS, David I. Marshall also participated in operations to break
through the heavily defended German Siegfried Line, composed of numerous
bunkers and other defense works; the result of these efforts was the
complete breakdown of German opposition on the Western front; and
WHEREAS, Following the completion of his military service, David I.
Marshall moved to Baldwin Harbor, New York, and was employed as a chemi-
cal engineer for many years until his retirement; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which David I. Marshall served his country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
David I. Marshall has demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor David I. Marshall of Baldwin Harbor, New York, for his courageous
military service during World War II; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to David I. Marshall.
