LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow
upon the occasion of hosting its Fourth Annual Summer Soiree on June 16,
2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow upon the occasion of hosting its
Fourth Annual Summer Soiree on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Battery
Gardens, Manhattan, New York; and
WHEREAS, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) has been New York
City's leading workforce development provider for disconnected youth for
more than three decades; the success of this vital organization is truly
changing the lives of countless local young adults; and
WHEREAS, OBT was founded in a run-down storefront in 1983 by the late
Sister Mary Franciscus, RSM, to serve the at-risk, out-of-school, and
unemployed youth of Sunset Park, Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, Opportunities for a Better
Tomorrow continues to help disadvantaged youth and adults recognize
their own self-worth and advance towards self-sufficiency and financial
security through job training, academic reinforcement, improved life
skills, job placement, and support services; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of its Chief Executive Officer
Randy Peers, each of OBT's programs seeks to instill confidence in
participants so that they can increase their self-esteem and improve
their own chances to succeed; its training model stresses personal
discipline, holding participants accountable for their own success; and
WHEREAS, In addition, modeled after a simulated corporate work envi-
ronment, OBT programs require participants to dress and groom profes-
sionally, be on time each day, handle work assignments with deadlines,
and behave as they would be expected to behave at work; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 32 year history, Opportunities for a
Better Tomorrow has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and
communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its staff, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves;
and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Opportunities for a
Better Tomorrow; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow upon the occasion of hosting
its Fourth Annual Summer Soiree on June 16, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Randy Peers, Chief Executive Officer, Opportunities for a
Better Tomorrow.
