LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Monsignor John McCann upon the occasion
of his retirement as Pastor of St. Mary's Church in Manhasset, New York

WHEREAS, The spiritual guidance and nurturing of the citizens of the
State of New York is of great importance to the vitality and well-being
of our communities; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to bring full recog-
nition and just tribute to those individuals of religious commitment who
accept the responsibility of moral leadership and render the wisdom of
human understanding; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Monsignor John McCann upon the occasion of his retirement as Pastor of
St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church; this auspicious occasion was cele-
brated with a party held in his honor on Friday, May 29, 2015, at the
North Hills Country Club in Manhasset, New York; he will officially
retire on June 24, 2015; and
WHEREAS, A native of New Hyde Park, New York, Monsignor John McCann
attended St. Mary's High School before completing his graduate and post-
graduate studies at St. John's University and Immaculate Conception
Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor John McCann became the Associate Pastor at St.
Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Glencove, New York, in 1974, and was
appointed Pastor 10 years later; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, this esteemed religious leader was named a Domestic
Prelate by Pope John Paul II; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor John McCann became the 11th Pastor in the history
of St. Mary's Church in 1998; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious tenure, Monsignor John McCann directed
all pastoral activity within the parish and its elementary and high
schools; he also presided over Manhasset's Catholic community during
such major events as the September 11th terrorist attacks and Superstorm
Sandy; and
WHEREAS, On May 31, 2015, Monsignor John McCann commemorated the 50th
Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood with a celebratory Mass;
and
WHEREAS, As he enters retirement, Monsignor John McCann leaves behind
a tremendous legacy of service to his congregation at St. Mary's Church;
and
WHEREAS, Monsignor John McCann will be long remembered for his many
inspirational good works, and for his exemplary leadership; he continues
to be an inspirational leader and role model for all members of the
community: now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Monsignor John McCann upon the occasion of his retirement as
Pastor of St. Mary's Church in Manhasset, New York, noting his unremit-
ting and compassionate faith and his service to God, humanity, and his
community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Monsignor John McCann.
