LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sol Greenberg upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Albany County at its Veterans
Recognition Program on June 11, 2015
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend these
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sol
Greenberg upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
by Albany County at its Veterans Recognition Program on Thursday, June
11, 2015, at the Albany County Office Building, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Albany, New York, Sol Greenberg is being recog-
nized with this esteemed honor for his courageous and dedicated service
to his country; and
WHEREAS, Sol Greenberg served his country with honor and distinction
from February 3, 1942 through July of 1970, as a member of the United
States Navy Reserves; and
WHEREAS, After enlisting on February 3, 1942, Sol Greenberg entered
the "V7" program, an accelerated officer course at Columbia University,
New York City; in the summer of 1942, he was commissioned at St. John
the Divine Episcopal Cathedral, Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, Sol Greenberg was assigned to the USS Sapelo where he served
as a line officer on countless trans-Atlantic convoys supplying the
requisite goods and materials to United States Soldiers during World War
II, stopping at ports in Murmansk, Russia, Aruba, and Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba; and
WHEREAS, Commander Sol Greenberg was awarded the WWII Victory Medal
and the Sea Service Medal for his outstanding military service; and
WHEREAS, Following his discharge from the Navy, Sol Greenberg used the
GI Bill to attend Albany Law School, and subsequently, served seven
terms as Albany County District Attorney; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife of 70 years, Bea, who
feels privileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad, Sol
Greenberg demonstrated his love for his country and merits forevermore
the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sol Greenberg upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Albany County at its Veterans Recognition Program on June
11, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sol Greenberg.
